Frequently Asked Questions

Practical information about counselling, Telehealth, NDIS support and Kintsugi sessions at Healing Arts, including common questions about therapy, access and support options.

Who do you work with?

Healing Arts supports adults, adolescents and children aged 6+, with sessions available in person in Perth and via Telehealth across Australia.

Do I need a psychologist or counsellor?

Both psychologists and counsellors can support emotional wellbeing and mental health concerns. A psychologist may be more appropriate if you need a formal diagnosis, assessment, or Medicare-rebated treatment under a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP). A counsellor may be a better fit if you are seeking trauma-informed therapeutic support, help with emotional regulation, practical strategies, and deeper therapeutic work without needing diagnosis or Medicare. Healing Arts offers counselling for DV/IPV, emotional abuse, coercive control, trauma, PTSD, anxiety, ADHD/autism, grief, relationship difficulties and life transitions, tailored to the individual.

Is counselling cheaper than seeing a psychologist?

Often, yes. Depending on fees and rebate eligibility, counselling can sometimes be comparable in cost to - or cheaper than - seeing a psychologist after the gap is considered, with often less wait time, if any.

Do you offer counselling in person or online?

Yes. Sessions are available in person in Ellenbrook office, Perth and via Telehealth across Australia.

Do I have to wait weeks for an appointment?

No. Immediate availability may be available. Please contact us or visit the Services & Bookings page for current options.

Do you provide emergency or crisis services?

No. Healing Arts does not provide emergency or crisis support. If you are in distress and need immediate assistance, contact your GP, your nearest hospital emergency department, or call 000. You can also contact Lifeline on 13 11 14.

What can I expect from counselling?

Beginning counselling can feel like a big step. Sessions provide a safe, respectful and confidential space to explore what is happening in your life at your own pace. Counselling may include understanding patterns, developing practical strategies for coping and emotional regulation, and exploring deeper issues that may be contributing to distress.

Is the therapist qualified and/or professionally registered?

Yes. Nerrelle Champion holds a Master of Counselling and is registered with the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) and the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA).

Do I need a referral to book?

No. A referral is not required to book counselling with Healing Arts.

Can I use a Mental Health Care Plan?

No. Mental Health Care Plans are for Medicare-rebated psychology and certain other eligible services. Healing Arts Psychotherapy & Counselling does not provide Medicare rebates through a Mental Health Care Plan.

Can I still see you if I have a Mental Health Care Plan?

Yes. You are welcome to access counselling privately even if you have a Mental Health Care Plan for another provider. Sessions with Healing Arts would be booked as private appointments and would not be claimable through Medicare.

Do you accept private health insurance?

No. Sessions are currently not claimable through private health insurance.

Can I access counselling privately?

Yes. Counselling can be accessed privately without a referral.

What kinds of concerns can counselling support?

Support is available for a range of concerns including DV/IPV, emotional abuse, coercive control, trauma, PTSD, anxiety, emotional regulation, ADHD/autism, grief, relationship difficulties, self-worth, identity, stress and life transitions. Counselling is tailored to the individual and may support both day-to-day coping and deeper therapeutic work.

What approach do you use?

Healing Arts uses an integrative, trauma-informed and evidence-informed approach. Depending on the individual and their goals, sessions may draw from DBT-informed strategies, Mentalisation-Based Therapy (MBT), attachment-informed perspectives, psychodynamic approaches, somatic awareness, parts-based perspectives, strengths-based practice and creative or reflective approaches where helpful.

Are creative, art-based approaches used in sessions?

Yes. Creative and reflective approaches can be included where helpful or requested. These may support insight, emotional expression, regulation and meaning-making alongside talk-based therapy.

Do you support NDIS participants?

Yes. Support is available for eligible self-managed and plan-managed NDIS participants. Please see the NDIS page for further information about service options and suitability.

Can NDIS sessions be provided at home?

Depending on circumstances, support may be available in person, via telehealth or in-home where appropriate. 30 minute radius applies.

Is your practice neuroaffirming and LGBTQIA+ affirming?

Yes. Healing Arts is a neuroaffirming and LGBTQIA+ affirming practice, committed to offering a safe, respectful and inclusive space for people of diverse identities and lived experiences.
